Learning Flash

So I thought it would be a good idea to at least try and participate in The Rubber Onion‘s Animation Battle (here are the entries for last month). This month’s theme is “Handshake fail”. I seriously doubt I’ll actually finish my submission on time, but it’s giving me a good excuse to start learning Flash, and what’s the worst that can happen, right?

I haven’t abandoned my other projects, oh no. I’m waiting to hear from the book guys before I move forward with the cover, and I’m still looking for the materials for Boonka’s coat and wheelbarrow. My mom reasonably pointed out that it’s easier to pull a cart than push one, especially over sandy dunes and stuff. That and four wheels are better than two. So it looks like I might be changing her wheelbarrow into some sort of cart, just because it makes more sense.
I’m not sure if I mentioned it before, but in the original design Boonka went starkers underneath that coat. And upon rethinking it, and realizing that my first association was a hairy middle-aged man wearing nothing but a trench-coat, that was no longer the route I wanted to take . So now she has a lovely striped pair of long johns instead.

Seeing how I don’t really want to show of my pathetic Flash attempts just yet, and then not having enough computer time left over to do more colour studies for Boonka, I ended up sketching Eli during the end of her nap. She woke up half-way through. Best way to wake my baby – start drawing her!

    • Thanks πŸ™‚ You guys and your podcast are very motivating when it comes to animation, and very good to listen to as I grumble at various layers and try to remember my shortcuts πŸ™‚

    • Ooh, do you have experience with it? I’m mostly going off learning from some YouTube videos, and looking up specific issues and problems I have on various forums, but I’m sensing that there’s an easier, better way to go around some things that I’m “inventing” and discovering by myself.

      • Yep, however, since I had bought a licensed Adobe master collection before all this subscription malarkey and renaming, I’m going to stick to that for as long as it works πŸ™‚

      • I know that’s right.
        Simplicity is key.
I had some prior 2D/Cell animation experience prior to my exposure to Flash, so my biggest surprise was all the cool features the software could do for you… Man you make me want to animate again. πŸ™‚
